This category of polyethylene wax is an important segment of the MARCUS product range. These are ultra-fine powders of which there are two grades (M 5005 & M 5010) which are based upon M 300. The average particle sizes are 5 & 10 microns respectively although the particle size spread is as shown:-
| MICRONS | M 5005 | M 5010 |
|---|---|---|
| (% Less than ) | ||
| 31.0 | 100.0 | |
| 22.0 | 98.0 | |
| 16.0 | 83.3 | |
| 11.0 | 100.0 | 60.0 |
| 7.8 | 95.2 | 38.0 |
| 5.5 | 64.5 | 24.5 |
| 3.9 | 41.6 | 15.6 |
| 2.8 | 25.2 | 9.2 |
| 1.9 | 12.0 | 3.9 |
| 1.4 | 5.6 | 1.2 |
| 0.9 | 1.5 | 0.0 |
These micronised grades retain the hard and high melting point of M 300 and both of these parameters are key elements in ensuring their status as high performance additives. The most common use is as “stir-in” products at a recommended level of 1-3% to lacquers, varnishes and inks, both solvent and water based, to augment the quality in the following respects:-
- Abrasion and scratch resistance
- Rub resistance
- Antiblocking behaviour
- Reduction of COF
